Rulebook – Tournament 2024

The SUBWAY Brandon Female Hockey Challenge is organized in part with Hockey Brandon and is a sanctioned tournament by Hockey Manitoba. The tournament shall follow the Hockey Canada rules governing minor hockey competition.

General Rules

  • JERSEYS: Home teams shall wear Dark jerseys. Away teams shall wear light or white jerseys.
    • NOTE: All Brandon teams and possibly others, only have one set of jerseys. Coaches should confirm 30 minutes prior to game time which jerseys they will wear. If both teams want to agree to wear their colored Jerseys, that is acceptable as long as the difference is obvious. Such as Dark Blue vs Orange. Final decisions can be made by the Rink Supervisors.
  • All teams are to be prepared to play 10 minutes prior to their scheduled game time.
  • A team late for opening face off will be assessed one goal for every 5 minutes late to a maximum of 3,
    at which time the game will be awarded to the other team.
  • Warm ups will be 4 minutes (the time keeper will run the clock, pucks will be supplied).
  • There is NO overtime in round robin games.
  • U11 & U13: All periods are stop time. 1st and 2nd periods are 15 mins, the 3rd period is 20 mins. No flood during U11 & U13 games.
  • U15 & U18: All periods are stop time. 1st and 2nd periods are 15 mins, Ice Flood, and the 3rd period is 20 mins.
  • The mercy rule (all divisions) applies when one team has a minimum six goal lead in the 3rd period, at which time ‘stop time’ becomes ‘straight time’.
  • Any minor penalty assessed during run time will be a three minute penalty on the clock.
  • Points: Win = 3 points, Tie = 1 point, Loss = 0 points.

Overtime for Playoff Games

At the conclusion of round robin play, overtime will be “sudden death victory” and played in 5 minute intervals.

The game clock will reflect the intervals as follows…

  • (5) minutes stop time – 4 on 4
  • (5) minutes stop time – 3 on 3, repeating until one team scores
  • No player changes are allowed on any whistle in overtime.
    Changes must only occur only “on the fly”
  • Penalties occurring during OT, will result in short handed play for the duration of the assessed penalty time. At no time shall a team go below 2 skaters on the ice during OT penalties / play.

Penalties / Game Ejection

  • Any player assessed three minor stick penalties or a total of 4 penalties in a game shall be required to leave the ice area for the remainder of the game.
  • Any player assessed a match penalty or a gross misconduct will be suspended for the balance of the tournament.
  • Any player or coach or other person who is assessed a major penalty during the last 10 minutes of the game will miss the remainder of the game being played and one additional game. This rule does not apply to 10 minute misconduct penalties.
  • All minor and major penalties will be served at discretion of the officials at normal intervals at respectively, except in cases where the mercy rule has taken effect and run time has began.
    (i.e., minor penalties will be 3 minutes at running time and major penalties will be 6 minutes at running time).

Tie Break Formula

To determine team standings in the event of a tie after round robin play, the following criteria in order shall be used, and at the sole decision of the tournament committee.

  1. Head to head winner;
  2. Best % from “goals for” divided by (“goals for” + “goals against”). No more than a seven goal spread shall be factored into the equation (i.e. if a team wins 16 to 3 the score used for the calculation will be 10 to 3);
  3. Fewest goals against;
  4. Fewest total penalty minutes;
  5. First goal scored earliest in the first game;
  6. Coin toss will be used.

End of Games

  • Following each game, players shall shake hands or fist bump, and then line up on their blue line. Player of the game award presentations and/or medal presentations will then occur.
  • Coaches and managers shall be responsible for selecting their own players for Player of the game, at the conclusion of each game.
  • Coaches and managers are responsible for their players conduct on and off the ice, including off premise. (Hotels)

Miscellaneous

  • Teams are allowed one, 30 second “time out” per game.
  • No stick or equipment measurements allowed.
  • No protests are allowed, the officials call on the ice will be final.
  • The referees’ decisions are final in all matters pertaining to rule interpretations, the assessment of penalties, and the awarding of goals and assists.
  • The Tournament Committee reserves the right to alter and enforce any rule deemed necessary to operate the tournament in a timely and effective manner
  • By participating, all players, coaches and parents understand that the sponsors of this tournament, its officials, arena staff / management and all persons concerned with the organization of the tournament shall not be held liable for any injury or accident which may be incurred by any player or team officials while participating in, coming to or going from the tournament.
